A method is provided for controlling whether a steering manoeuvre such as a left turn initiated by the driver of a host vehicle 100 is permitted or prevented. A driver input representing the steering manoeuver associated with non-autonomous operation is detected. A first target vehicle 140a in an adjacent lane 135a relative to the host vehicle 100 is identified. The steering manoeuvre is allowed when a second target vehicle 140b (path target) is detected in an original lane 135b relative to the host vehicle 100. The steering manoeuvre is prevented when no second target vehicle 140b (lane target) is detected in the original lane 135b of the host vehicle 100. Prevention may be by opposing steering. Prevention may occur by brake application, but may be overridden by accelerator pedal application being sustained above a threshold angle. The method preferably takes account of threat levels of the target vehicles 140 to provide a collision avoidance system for multiple vehicle scenarios.
