Upon detecting a failure in a sensor 605 in a vehicle, a request for a surrogate sensor is sent 610. Communications are established with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) carrying the surrogate sensor 635 and which attaches to the vehicle. A vehicle subsystem is actuated based at least in part on data from the surrogate sensor. The system may allow an immobile vehicle to self-recover 670 to a repair location where a permanent repair can be performed.
