A method is provided for automatically detecting and safely traversing an accumulation of ice on an impending bridge 300. The vehicle 202 automatically identifies its impending approach to the bridge 300 and senses an accumulation of ice thereon. The method then calculates a speed needed to prevent longitudinal slip between the vehicle 202 and the bridge 300, and automatically slows the vehicle 202 at a rate sufficient to enable the vehicle 202 to reach the calculated speed by the time it reaches a transition 302 to the bridge 300. A computing system (206 fig 2) comprising an icy bridge traversal module (208 fig 2) performs the method. A fusion algorithm combines inputs from sensors (210a-e fig 2) to indicate hazardous conditions. A radar sensor (210b) is used to determine a bridge type. The invention provides an early response to prevent slippage on upcoming ice.
