The current disclosure relates to the detection of moving objects, such as pedestrians 120, 130 when a host vehicle 110 moves in a rearward direction. This comprises identifying a region of interest 170 external to the host vehicle, such as a pavement or sidewalk; detecting a moving object 120, 130 within said region; determining that a collision between the object and the reversing vehicle is likely; and alerting the driver of the vehicle 110, possibly by a variable audible or visual signal which is dependent on the distance between the object and the vehicle. The vehicle may use a combination of imaging cameras 112 mounted on the vehicle and GPS signals, possibly from a device carried by the pedestrian 120, 130 to determine and track the pedestrians position and trajectory. This location may be further refined using LIDAR, RADAR or similar sensors 114.
