Sensors on a vehicle make a primary detection 704. For example, a break-in or hit-and-run may be detected by perpetually running accelerometers, ultrasonic sensors, microphones or sensors for detecting window breakage or door opening. Objects 708 within a focus area 706 are listed and marked as partially or fully identified 710. For example, optical character recognition software may analyse an image including a license plate and mark it as fully identified if each character is resolved. Connected vehicles are selected based on estimated velocities 714 of the partially identified objects and instructed (e.g. by hand-off 716) to record those objects and transmit the recordings to an address. The list may be an active tracking list and objects may be removed from it upon being fully identified. The focus area may be calculated based on a side of the vehicle identified from the primary detection and an elapsed time and objects outside the focus area may be excluded from the tracking list.
