A vehicle system includes a processor and a memory accessible to the processor and storing instructions executable by the processor. The instructions include detecting a handoff request 405 indicating a transition of a host vehicle from an autonomous mode of operation to a non-autonomous mode of operation and assessing driver competency 410, such as driver experience or ability or skill entered for each identified driver into the memory. Driver competency may be determined by prompting and monitoring a response time of the driver to provide a driver input and/or determining a smoothness of the driver input, e.g. inputs to steering wheel, brake or accelerator pedals etc. The handoff request is approved 420 if the driver competency exceeds a predetermined threshold 415. If the driver competency fails to exceed the predetermined threshold the handoff request may be denied 450 or approved 420 depending on an outcome of a modified alert time 445, which provides more time for the driver to prepare. During transition a resistance 430 may be applied to the driver input.
