A system for visual inspection a motor vehicle, comprising an image acquisition device in the form of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a camera for acquiring images of a motor vehicle, and a data processing device to receive and process the images to automatically determine a current state or condition of the object. A three dimensional (3D) model of the vehicle in an undamaged state may be used as a reference to compare with the current state of the vehicle. The system may use a convolutional neural net to learn an undamaged state of the motor vehicle or to automatically detect and classify defects. The system may use a flight path determination algorithm to autonomously determine a flight path for the UAV. The flight path may be dependent on a region of interest of the motor vehicle so as to spend more time imaging the region of interest.
