A vehicle is provided having sensors 108 monitoring vehicle data and memory 122 storing a plurality of classifies from a server that predict a preference to transition from a first mode to a second mode based on a subset of the data. A processor is coupled to memory 122 and sensors 108, selects one of the classifiers based on a driving context (which may include a geographic location, a day of the week or a time of day) and applies the data to the selected classifier to generate a recommendation on whether to switch to the second mode while driving a route. The recommendation is then provided to the driver, typically on an infotainment unit; optionally the vehicle can automatically switch modes. The classifier may be generated using machine learning techniques and design of experiment techniques, for example
