A plate-shaped body component such as a floor pan for a motor vehicle has a planar core zone 28, a planar edge zone 18 and a first intermediate zone 21. There is at least one step 22 between the edge 18 and intermediate 21 zones and at least one further step 25 between the intermediate 21 and the core 28 zones. Relative to the intermediate zone, the core zone and edge zone are displaced in opposite directions normal to the plane of the intermediate zone (e.g. core zone is above, and edge zone below the intermediate zone). A further intermediate zone 26 and another step 27 may be provided. First intermediate zone 21 may form a ring around core zone 28. Each step provides a deflection d of up to 6mm and the total deflection of the core zone relative to the edge zone is at least 8mm. The width w of an intermediate zone is at least as great as the deflection d between it and an adjacent zone. The resulting stiffening reduces noise by shifting resonant frequency so that overlap with engine noise frequencies is reduced.
