A vehicle navigation system incorporating altitude data from a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) network. The system comprises a short range transceiver arranged to receive and transmit messages, a processor arranged to send information relating to plural navigation routes to a DSRC system, send messages to a roadside system and receive altitude data associated with the navigation routes from the roadside system. The system includes a display to present the plural routes with associated altitude data to a user for selection, fig3. The system may have a constant or dynamic interaction with the roadside system to show the real-time altitude of the vehicle. The navigation system may include a GPS system to provide the initial routes which are incorporated with the altitude data 2.
