A vehicle computing device detects an emergency vehicle near an autonomous host vehicle, receives data from nearby vehicles indicating whether any of them are operating in an autonomous mode, and transmits that data to the emergency vehicle. A driver of the emergency vehicle may thus be informed of which vehicles are autonomous and which are human-driven, and which of the autonomous vehicles are further operating in an emergency mode. The host vehicle may operate in an emergency mode after detecting the emergency vehicle, which may prevent changing speed or changing lanes. The path of the emergency vehicle may be determined. If the host vehicle is in the path of the emergency vehicle, the host vehicle may continue to operate in the emergency mode. If not the host vehicle may instead operate in a non-emergency mode. Data transmissions between the vehicles may be via a vehicle-to-vehicle i.e. V2V communication protocol.
