An apparatus for mounting a camera 104 to a vehicle comprises a rotatable shaft 112 coupled to a motor 106, with the shaft including a mechanism 118 for mounting a camera. A controller 116 coupled to the motor controls the rotation of the shaft based on a desired orientation of the camera. The controller may be connected to an infotainment or navigation system in the vehicle, or to a mobile device via a wireless communication link. The controller may control rotation of the shaft based on the steering angle of the vehicle, vehicle speed, lateral acceleration, steering wheel rotation speed or vehicle yaw rate. The motor and controller may be contained in rear-view 102 or side-view mirrors. A magnetic sensor proximate the shaft may determine a current rotational orientation, speed or direction of rotation of the shaft, which may be communicated to the controller. Also claimed are a rear-view mirror comprising the apparatus and a method of generating instructions using processors to rotate a motor coupled to a camera.
