A vehicle crush can (12, Fig2) includes a first portion 16, a second portion 20 spaced from the first portion, and an intermediate portion 18 extending from the first portion to the second portion. The first portion, second portion, and intermediate portion are aligned on a longitudinal axis. The crush can has corrugations 24 elongated along the longitudinal axis on the first portion and terminating on the intermediate portion. A second independent claim states the crush can tapers from the first portion to the second portion. It is preferred that the wall thickness remains constant along the device, and may be 1.1mm. Ribs 48 and spines 46 could be positioned in an alternating arrangement circumferentially about the longitudinal axis, with one of the corrugations disposed between each adjacent rib and spine. A rear plate and front plate could respectively connect the first portion to a vehicle frame and the second portion to a bumper beam. Ultra high strength steel may be used as the device material.
