A system comprising a vehicle windscreen member 101 and a primary light source 106. The member comprises a first surface (103, fig.1), and a first cavity (102) forms a hole in the first surface. The primary light source is arranged so that emitted light passes into the member through a side of the first cavity, the light then travels within the member until it has undergone total internal reflection from one or more surfaces of the member a plurality of times (See fig.3). The system may be used to detect dirt, rain, ice or imperfections such as stone chips or cracks within the window pane. The system may also be used to heat the windscreen as the emitted light is absorbed, acting to de-mist and improve visibility. Also claimed is a method of manufacturing the system, a vehicle comprising the system, a drill bit for forming the first cavity and a light source and plug suitable for mounting within the cavity.
