A computing device determines that a first time for a first sound generated by a vehicle 101 to reach a first sound maximum amplitude and a second time for a second sound generated by the vehicle to reach a second sound maximum amplitude are within a range. The sound, detected by a microphone 112, may be that of a tyre 150 striking an uneven part of a road, eg rumble strips or a pothole. An object 160, eg a traffic sign, street lamp or telephone pole, that reflects the second sound is identified based on an interval between receipt of the first and second sounds. A speed of sound is determined based at least in part on the time interval, and a distance to the object eg determined by radar. The humidity is determined based at least in part on the speed of sound. A vehicle subsystem 107, eg climate control system or spark timing, is adjusted based on the humidity. The invention obviates the need for a dedicated humidity sensor.
