A method comprising identifying a current state of a vehicle 110-130, determining a maximum acceleration capability of the vehicle 140, determining a desired acceleration profile to follow the maximum acceleration capability 150 and control an acceleration of the vehicle based at least in part the desired acceleration profile 160. The state of the vehicle, which may be an autonomous platform (ATP), may include speed, battery charge, wheel torque, barometric pressure, engine temperature, fuel octane rating and tyre data. The maximum acceleration capability of the vehicle may be determined from predicted set of torque response values, vehicle mass, road grade and surface mu, pitch angle of the vehicle and wheel radius. Additionally map and route data may be used as well as communication from a second vehicle (V2V) or road infrastructure (V2I) and an obstacle detection sensor, which may be a LIDAR or SONAR sensor. Discrete data may be sent from individual controllers around the vehicle (17, 18, 19 fig.1) to the autonomous vehicle controller (14 fig.1) for interpolation to generate the profile.
