A railway safety device 10 is used to measure a clearance between the head of a rail and an obstruction such as water, snow or sand. The device has a indicator 12 which comprises indicators 14, 18 and 16 and the indicators may be different colours. Indicator 14 may be green to represent a minimum safe condition whereby if this is covered by an obstruction the rail may be deemed unsafe. If only red indicator 16 is visible then the rail may be regarded as dangerous. The safety device also includes a connector 20 for attaching the device to a rail fastener 22 where the device is vertical and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rails as shown in figure 6.
