A marker for illuminating an area of an aircraft, comprises a Photoluminescent material, e.g. phosphorescent material 104, arranged to emit blue visible light in response to an excitation. The photoluminescent material has an emission spectrum with a maximum peak intensity of from 400nm to 510nm, in particular 490nm. The photoluminescent material contains a Europium and Dysprosium doped strontium aluminate with the formula Sr4A114025:Eu,Dy and optionally one or more further phosphorescent pigments. A marker system is disclosed for illuminating areas of an aircraft, the system including a plurality of markers for highlighting locations and/or routes to emergency exits of an aircraft, e.g. as part of an elongate track secured to a floor of the aircraft cabin.
