A controller for an autonomous vehicle receives audio signals from at least one microphone 402 and map data regarding a region about the autonomous vehicle, and if both indicate a high probability of another vehicle proximate to the autonomous vehicle, invokes anti-collision obstacle avoidance with respect to the probable location of the other vehicle 418, i.e. by actuating steering, acceleration or braking. The controller may also analyse the map data to identify a landmark within the region, e.g. an emergency vehicle station, and identify a vehicle type from the sound (i.e. a siren) 412. If the two correspond, the controller may confirm the predicted vehicle type and landmark 414, 416, and react accordingly 418.
