A first vehicle computer is programmed to receive data from a first vehicle sensor indicating at least one signal from a second vehicle 101. The computer is further programmed to determine that the signal is a request for permission for a second vehicle 101 to change lanes, and to provide a response to the request to the second vehicle. On reception of a permission signal from the first vehicle 102, the second vehicle computer may actuate a change of lane of the second vehicle 101. The request and/or response to the request may be based upon a threshold distance between the first and second vehicles, on a threshold distance between the second and a third vehicle, or a difference in speed between the first and second vehicles. The response to the request may include a change of speed of the first vehicle. The vehicle sensor may be a camera, and the signal may be a turn signal and/or flashing headlights. Human input may be required via a human machine interface in order to change the second vehicles lane of travel. The first and second computers may utilise short-range radio frequency, a cellular modem or vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) communications.
