A control system 110C to control winding speed of a winch 110 on a vehicle 100, the winch 110 having electric motor 116, winding speed being dependent on a speed of rotation of the vehicle powertrain, for instance wheel 102, 104 speed, and so as to limit to a substantially constant prescribed value of torque applied to a drum 112 of the winch 110. Winding speed may be proportional to powertrain speed. The speed at which the vehicle 100 is pulled over-ground may be equal to a speed at which the vehicle would be driven over ground if there were no significant wheel slip. The prescribed value of torque to be applied to a drum 112 may be selected through a user input device (figure 3). The system may apply a brake torque to the winch drum 112, which may effect regenerative braking, and may limit the rate of increase of torque applied to the drum 112 to the prescribed value. Power supply potential may be between 110V and 5kV. The vehicle may be electric or hybrid.
