A means for controlling the periodic transmission of beacon messages from a vehicular network station at a vehicle. At least one parameter is determined pertaining to the vehicle 10 and/or another vehicle 20 having an associated vehicular network station. The transmission periodicity of the beacon messages is updated in accordance with one or more of: a reaction distance; a slowing distance that identifies a distance determined for the vehicle 10 to decelerate from a current velocity to a velocity of the other vehicle 20; a positioning error; a latency for communications; whether a determined distance between the vehicle 10 and the other vehicle 20 is less than a minimum distance; and increasing the periodicity of the periodic transmission in response to a reduction in a determined distance between the vehicle 10 and the other vehicle 20. The invention seeks to set transmission periodicity at an appropriate value to maintain or improve safety whilst mitigating unnecessary resource utilisation.
