An aircraft 1 is supported on a nose landing gear 10 and port and starboard main landing gear undercarriages 11, 12. A data processing unit or feedback module 200 for monitoring the performance of at least one undercarriage is used for braking and/or steering the aircraft. The data processing unit is configured to receive data representative of operating characteristics of the undercarriage(s) and in order to do so the undercarriages are provided with a plurality of sensors which measure these various operating characteristics. The characteristics include longitudinal, lateral and vertical loading of the nose and main landing gears FxM, FyM, FzM, FxN, FyN, FzN, brake temperature TW, brake pressure PW, braking torque TeW and nose wheel angle θNW. Similarly a method for monitoring the performance of at least one aircraft undercarriage used for braking and/or steering an aircraft comprises the steps of receiving data representative of operating characteristics of the undercarriage(s) and using that data to calculate a maximum achievable braking force and/or yaw moment to be generated by the undercarriage(s).
