A kinetic energy recovery system 12 for a motor vehicle 10 is provided. The kinetic energy recovery system 12 comprises a flywheel 14 located in a first vacuum enclosure 22; and a second vacuum enclosure 32 comprising an inlet 34 in fluid communication with the exhaust 30 of the first vacuum enclosure 22 and arranged to be maintained at a pressure less than atmosphere for reducing the pressure at the outlet 30 of the first vacuum enclosure 22. The second vacuum enclosure 32 comprises an exhaust 36 through which gas can be pumped periodically at indeterminate intervals for maintaining the second vacuum enclosure 32 at a pressure less than atmosphere.
