An aircraft 1 having left and right main landing gear 2,3 includes a steering system based on differentials applied to the wheels of the left and right main wheels. The aircraft includes has powered wheels for ground taxiing and the landing gear also includes regenerative braking. The main landing gear are each provided with motor-generator assemblies to provide drive and regenerative braking and are controlled by wheel actuators 105,106. Ordinarily when the aircraft is in driving mode the wheels of both main landing gears are driven. In order to generate a yawing force for steering in an emergency mode, if nose wheel steering fails, a braking force is applied to one set of landing wheels which generates power through regenerative means. The regenerated power is used to help power the wheels of the opposite landing gear. Thus a differential steering force is generated.
