A system is disclosed comprising a transmitter which is to be located, at least 3 receivers and a control unit. The receivers are arranged for determining the location using trilateration and time-of-flight (TOF) information, and the control unit is arranged to generate an output signal in response to the transmitter being determined as not located in a pre-determined zone. The transmitter may be a wireless tag with a unique identification, worn for example as a wristband or neck pendant, or placed on marine equipment. In one embodiment, the system is a maritime tracking system wherein the receivers are mounted on a vessel or ship, and the system is used to assist crew members in man overboard situations in which the pre-determined zone is a safe area i.e. aboard the vessel. The system may also include a memory unit and/or GPS module, and the receivers may be arranged in a triangular layout in a plane parallel or a plane perpendicular to the plane of the pre-determine region.
