This is an application for a position indicator for a stricken aircraft. It overcomes the previous problem of being able to put the device in a suitable position on the aircraft, while at the same time satisfying the safety requirements of bodies such as the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Civil Aviation Authority. The device has a buoyant container 1 that is connected to a battery 8, or a power source and has a cylindrical extension 30 that is attached to a deployable pre-existing external component of the aircrafts fuselage 40. It also has an antenna 5 that is coupled to one or more transmitters 7 that are mounted within the buoyant container and are powered by the battery through a switch 9. The position indicator may also use a GPS, it may have a detection means for detecting either altitude, deceleration or water. The exterior skin of the pre-existing external component may conform to the existing aerodynamic profile of the surrounding aircraft fuselage.
