A vehicle control system includes a controller to output an alert to a wearable device 202 with a haptic alert mechanism upon detecting alert events indicative of lane departure, pedestrian detection, a distracted/drowsy driver or imminent collision. The alert event may be generated by a vehicle navigation system. The wearable device may be a smart watch or smart wristband, wirelessly connected to a vehicle control system via Bluetooth (RTM) or Wi-Fi (RTM) for example. The wearable device may detect physiological or biometric information such as pulse rate where the controller outputs an alert to the wearable device when the pulse rate is below a threshold limit and an alert event is detected. Additionally, the controller may output an alert to the wearable device when an alert event is detected when a vehicle is operating autonomously.
