A traffic offence detection system comprises a plurality of cameras 10 that each produces one or more frames for selection in a stream of video data and a control means 23 for controlling the selection of cameras, frames and fields of view. A method for detecting traffic offences uses the traffic detection system. The control means may synchronise the selection of one of the plurality of cameras and the selection of frames with the movement of a target vehicle. The field of view may be selected to provide the same view orientation for each frame of video data and is preferably a portion of the available field of view. The system may be used to detect the distance between vehicles, the speed or acceleration of a target vehicle or vehicle legal irregularities such as defective lights or overloading of the vehicle. A micro-processor may detect whether a traffic offence has been committed and may connect to a database to identify a vehicle or occupant or to initiate a law enforcement process. The system may assign a virtual camera to two separate vehicles 27, 50 to monitor each vehicle through a zone of authority of the system.
