A lateral protecting mechanism 130 is disposed on a lateral wing 123 of a child safety seat 120. The lateral protecting mechanism 130 includes a lateral protecting pad 131 and a release block 132. The lateral protecting pad 131 is movable between an extended in-use position and a folded non-use position and can be hinged at one side (fig 8). The release block 132 is slidably mounted on the side of the pad 131 and can have a resilient spring 1324 to urge it to protrude in an extended position. When the lateral protecting pad 131 is in its extended in-use position the release block 132 is extended to hold it extended. In the event of a lateral vehicle collision the protecting mechanism 130 acts to absorb some lateral movement by collapsing. To manually close the lateral pad 131, the surface 1322 of the release block 132 can be pressed against the action of the spring 1324. The lateral protection mechanism 130 is mounted in a through-hole 1231 in the lateral wing 123 of the childseat.
