A vehicle engine is shutdown in response to brake pressure Pbrk exceeding a threshold, and restarted in response to accelerator pedal position exceeding a position threshold. In response to engine shutdown a first brake system increases torque Tehb to a threshold, and when battery voltage V decreases below a threshold the first system decreases torque and another brake system (e.g. electronic parking brake) increases torque Tepb. Driver intent is evaluated based on brake pressure and torque (fig 5) or acceleration demand (fig. 6); while the time the brakes can hold a vehicle on a hill before engine restart in maximised based on battery voltage (fig. 7) or a change in brake fluid pressure (fig. 8). Thus the lower electrical energy demanding parking brake system is used later.
