The present invention relates to a surfacing material for use in an automatic tape laying device, comprising a layer of reinforcement material 412 and a conducting surface layer 414 in contact with the reinforcement material, wherein the surface layer 414 extends beyond the surface of the reinforcement material 412. Also claimed is a composite article comprising multiple adjacent lengths of the surfacing material. Preferably the reinforcement material of a first surfacing material 602 is spaced from the reinforcement material of a second surface material 604, but the conductive surface layer of one length of surfacing material overlaps the conductive surface layer of a second length of surface material 608. The surfacing material provides improved surface conductivity perpendicular to the tape direction whilst also presenting fewer defects, and may protect aircraft from lightning strikes.
