A short-range polling system comprises a portable device, such as a remote keyless entry fob having a controller that produces a polling signal with a transmission period 612, a receive period 614, and a sleep period, the sleep period being longer than the transmission period and receive period combined and the transmission period 612 and sleep period together being longer than a receive period 710 of a vehicle. A transceiver connected to the controller transmits the polling signal from the device or receives a vehicle signal at the device. A vehicle with a communication system has a polling signal receive time period 710 greater than transmission time period of the portable device 612. In a second invention, a polling signal is transmitted which includes a plurality of time-separated polling transmission signals 616 and a final polling transmission signal. A poll response signal is then monitored for with a single receive period. If no poll response is received then the polling signal is transmitted again. If a poll response is received, then a passive communication mode is entered. Energy savings for the wireless device are provided by limiting the number of receive actions and time periods in the wireless device.
