A charging arrangement for an electric vehicle, such as an electric bus, has a receiving connector or current collector 202, 204, 206, 208 mounted on the roof of an automobile. The current receiver 202-208 has three elongate conductor portions 202, 204, 206, 208 which are in line, longitudinally lined up. An overhead charging gantry 222 has current contacting members 214, 216, 218, 220 which can be moved vertically up and down to contact with the current collector 202-208. Also presented is a current collector with a cover housing, protecting it from dirt, weather and the elements. The three conductors of the current receiver 202-208 may be able to tilt or pivot, and may do so independently. The collector may be at a fixed height, or may move vertically a small distance. The overhead charging gantry 222 may lift up in the event of a power failure or outage.
