A method of testing an optical door sensor 100 with an emitter 102 and a receiver 106 comprising setting the sensor 100 in an offset state 304, in which a sensor operating parameter is offset from a baseline setting, emitting a light signal from the emitter 102 and determining whether it is detected by the receiver 106 and generating an alert 316 when the signal test result is negative for the offset state and the offset amount is less than or equal to a limit margin. The signal test has a positive result if the light signal is detected and a negative result if the light signal is not detected. The test may be carried out with the sensor 100 in a plurality of progressively offset states. This may determine an operating margin which may relate to the deterioration of the sensor 100. The sensor operating parameter may relate to the intensity of the light signal, sensitivity of the receiver or electronic noise intensity in the circuitry of the sensor 100. There may be a plurality of emitters 102 and receivers 106. The sensor 100 may be used in automatic doors such as elevators. The method may include a cleaning operation to clean dust off of the sensor 100.
