A digital radio receiver system is provided as a module for retro-fit connection to the radio aerial/antenna of a vehicle or the like. The system comprises an antenna 21 connected to a radio receiver 19 which is configured to scan and receive digital radio channels (e.g. DAB, DARS). A wireless communications module (e.g. Bluetooth module 29) wirelessly transmits information about available digital radio channels to an external device, such as a smartphone or tablet 39. A user selects a digital channel at the device 39, the user selection being transmitted back to the wireless module 29. The selected digital channel is decoded (e.g. at converter DAC 27) and transmitted as a modulated (e.g. Frequency modulated FM) signal down a wired feed 9 to an existing analogue radio head unit 11 for output on a given channel. A renewable power supply unit 23, such as a wind turbine or solar cell unit, supplies electrical energy to a battery 31 to power the receiver, communications module and transmitter. The adaptor may be provided as a single module 1 to be fitted to an existing whip or fin-type aerial base 3 and enables retro-fitting of a digital radio reception capability without requiring physical connection to the existing vehicle power supply system. Also disclosed is a digital radio receiver system and method in which data associating a plurality of analogue radio frequencies with respective digital radio channels is stored.
