A hydraulic elevator buffer 10' comprises a first hollow tube 11', closed by a closure member 12' and at an open end has a second hollow tube 13'. The closure member includes a tapered pin 17' and the second hollow tube 13' includes a perforated ring 14 through which the tapered pin 17' extends defining a variable dimension fluid orifice. The buffer 10' includes a resiliently deformable member 22' between the tubes 11, 13. The hollow interiors 68' contain an incompressible fluid 23 which, during compression of the tubes 11, 13, passes through the fluid orifice producing a controlled damping force attenuating such compressive force. The buffer 10' further includes a safety switch 48 and actuator 54, which may be a cam surface. The first tube 11' additionally supports a hollow housing 46, which may be transparent, that communicates with the interior of the tubes 11, 13 so that the level of fluid 23 is measurable in the housing 46. The buffer 10 may have a reduced weight and/or be cheaper to produce. There may be a reaction surface secured to the tapered pin 17. A hollow sleeve 33 may stabilise the buffer 10.
