Vehicle 1 controller 40 has first control mode causing net torque reduction at wheel 12, 13 of first / front axle 19F if wheel slip exceeds first threshold. Torque coupling / differential 30 controls torque to second / rear axle 26R. Controller 40 detects split-mu condition where wheel spin on one side of each axle e.g. 12, 14 exceeds spin of opposing wheels e.g. 13, 15 by predetermined amount and, in second control mode, reduces net drive torque of the higher slip wheel of first axle 19F to below a second threshold, which is below the first threshold. Coupling 30 may reduce torque to faster spinning rear wheel via friction clutch 27. Controller 40 may sense terrain type and select corresponding operating mode. Split-mu condition may rely on difference in surface coefficient of friction, and may comprise lateral or diagonal split-mu. Net torque reduction may constitute applying brake torque.
