A vehicle system for detecting low clearance locations may include maintaining a geographical information database of points of interest defined by a clearance height. A first sensor detects a low clearance structure and a second sensor determines its location and the geographical information database is updated with the location of the low clearance structure to generate a point of interest (POI). A vehicle system may also detect low clearance locations where a sensor is used to monitor the clearance height of structures to be compared with a specified vehicle height and where an alert is issued if a structure height is lower than the vehicle height. A system may also alert a user to low clearance structures where a vehicle height and location are determined and are compared with a database of low clearance POIs and where an alert is issued if the vehicle is approaching one of the POIs.
