A method of adapting a human-machine interface within a vehicle, the method comprising: monitoring user interaction with the human-machine interface within the vehicle; determining the frequency with which the user selects available user-selectable interface options within the human-machine interface; adapting the human-machine interface in dependence on the frequency with which the user selects the available user-selectable interface options within the human-machine interface. Aspects of the invention include the human-machine interface comprises a display screen and adapting the interface comprises changing the appearance of certain on-screen elements in comparison to other on-screen elements. Changing the appearance of on-screen elements could comprise: changing the font colour of text; changing the colour of the element; increasing the brightness of high use interface options relative to low use interface options; decreasing the brightness of low use interface options relative the high use interface options; removing certain on-screen elements from a given menu level of a menu hierarchy. It provides a method for adapting a human-machine interface within a vehicle based on the users usage pattern. The frequency with which a user interacts with available user-selectable interface options is monitored and the HMI adapted accordingly.
