A lift controller has a means of recording information relating to the positions of floor levels, possibly using door zone vanes, mechanical switches or optically readable labels during a calibration run. A speed profile is calculated for a lift car travelling from an origin to the destination floor using the recorded floor information with the lift controller driving the car along the lift shaft according to the calculated speed and wherein the magnitude of the jerk during acceleration and/or deceleration phases satisfies: jerk (θ) = jerkpeak (1-cos(θ)) 2 where θ = 180 t/tj or θ = 360 t/tj and where t is the time since the beginning of the jerk, tj is the total duration of the jerk and jerkpeak is the peak jerk.
