A method 6 is provided for detecting a poor road surface for a motor vehicle (l, Figure l) with at least four wheels (2, Figure l). The method involves monitoring vibrations occurring on at least four wheels and a vibration analysis is performed on each monitored wheel, detecting and comparing intensity and frequency of vibrations and comparing them to predetermined threshold values 12, 16 for the intensity and frequency, which may be variable based on vehicle speed. The current substrate is recognised as a poor road surface when thresholds 12, 16 for intensity and frequency are simultaneously exceeded on all monitored wheels. An anti-jolt system may be provided for improving comfort on good road surfaces and deactivated when a poor road surface is detected. A vehicle using the method is also provided.
