Improvements in machine vision systems to address situations where such systems cannot reliably identify an independent light source from the reflections of light sources that are functionally associated with the machine vision system itself and in particular where camera based road vehicle automatic headlight dipping systems struggle to distinguish between retro-reflective guideposts and low power bicycle headlights. A typical automatic headlight dipping system consists of a camera, l, an electronic control unit, 3, and headlights, 5 and 7. The electronic control unit continuously analyses the camera output to identify oncoming and preceding vehicles and adjust the headlight beams accordingly. The electronic control unit also identifies when the camera is exposing each image and ensures that the headlights are momentarily switched off. Consequently, the images are devoid of retro-reflective objects that might otherwise be misinterpreted as headlights or tail lights.
