A vehicle propelled by a flywheel 7 comprises a vehicle battery 2 which is charged overnight via socket 1. An isolation switch 3 is closed, the electric motor 5 receives power and turns the flywheel 7. When the designed rotational speed is reached, switch 4 is opened and clutch 6 is engaged. The brake 13 is released and clutch 9 is closed. The driver can increase or decrease speed by altering the ratio of the variable transmission 11. During operation the speed of the flywheel 7 will fall. An optical sensor 8 detects this, and sends a signal to control desk 10, which opens clutch 3 so that the motor 5 connects to the flywheel 7 to increase its rate of rotation. When the designed speed of rotation is reached the motor 5 will disengage. The arrangement may be applied to any vehicle, in particular to a tramcar.
