The method of configuring an electronic torque wrench (100, Figure 1) with an external device 160 includes establishing a wireless communication connection 170 between the wrench and the external device. A pre-set fastening task and a lock operation are both received from the external device. A batch count associated with the pre-set fastening task is determined. The wrench is configured 1204 with the batch count and the lock operation. The method determines if a cycle count matches the batch count 1208 and, if so, causes the wrench to enter a locked state 1212 that disables subsequent measurement operations of the torque wrench. A lock screen (914, Figure 9) may be displayed on the wrench in response to it entering the locked state. A haptic vibrator may be activated, or a light emitting diode may be illuminated in response to the wrench entering the locked state. If the wrench is in the locked state the method may include re-receiving the pre-set fastening task, or receiving a redo message, and causing the wrench to be removed from the locked state in response to the re-received task or in response to the redo message.
