Method for monitoring traffic V1-4, comprising: monitoring images from a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera 110 in a wide-angle (broad) field of view mode and detecting vehicles in the images (Fig.7A); determining when a vehicle has performed a predetermined action; and on detection of the action narrowing the field of view (zooming in) of the PTZ camera on the vehicle (Fig.7B). Predetermined actions may be entering or stopping in a predetermined or restricted area 10. Bounding boxes (11, Fig.4) may be placed around vehicles and movement of the bounding boxes tracked. Determining a vehicle has performed an illegal action may comprise detecting an overlap (12, Fig.4A) between bounding box and pre-determined area and either: defining an outline of the vehicle (13, Fig.4B) and detecting an overlap (O, Fig.4C) between the outline and pre-determined area; or determining position of the wheels (W1-4, Fig.6B); and determining whether a lowest point of the wheels (P1-4, Fig.6C) is within the area. The system may locate and identify a vehicle number plate. A second embodiment defines a method for monitoring objects, comprising: defining a bounding box around a detected object; tracking movement of the bounding box; determining the bounding box is within a pre-determined area; defining an object outline overlaps the pre-determined area.
