A control system 100 for controlling a park assist system 190 of a vehicle 300 receives first and second input signals (121, 141,Fig.1) respectively indicative of an operational condition of the vehicle and an attribute of a parking space. It uses these to determine whether the parking space is suitable and, if so, issues a corresponding output signal (161,Fig.1). The operational condition may be carriage of a load or mobility assistance device (e.g. wheelchair); a battery charge level; or occupation by a passenger (e.g. an infant or disabled person). The parking space may be suitable if it has appropriate dimensions; an associated charging point; or designation for a parent and child or disabled person. The first input signal may be received from a passenger identification device (e.g. mobile phone or key sensor) or from sensors (e.g. camera, seat weight sensor, seat belt sensor). The second input signal may be received from sensors (e.g. camera, lidar) or from a remote location information system (115,Fig.1). The control system may reserve the parking space.
