A control system for an automatic transmission of, for example a hybrid vehicle, the control system is configured to receive a signal indicative of an accelerator input and receiving at step 318 a signal indicative of a status of a propulsion system (22, fig 2) of the vehicle (1). Determining in step 306 a target gear ratio based on a speed parameter and the accelerator input. Outputting at step 310 a signal comprising instructions to cause initiation of a shift to the target gear ratio in dependence on the propulsion system (22) being in a predefined operating mode and outputting at step 314 a signal comprising instructions to cause cancellation of the shift to the target gear ratio in dependence on the propulsion system (22) being in transition between predefined operating modes during a period between outputting the signal comprising instructions to cause initiation of the shift and a completion of the shift. Also claimed is a vehicle, a method and computer readable instructions.
