An anti-collision apparatus 300 for a rail vehicle, said apparatus comprising a sensor system 301 signal transmitter and a signal receiver. The signal transmitter transmitting a signal over a field of operation and the receiver receives a reflected return from an object in the field of operation. The apparatus may comprise a camera 303 monitoring the field of operation of the transmitter. The camera preferably includes a light source for illuminating the field of operation. The device may also include a data logger to record selected data which may include the time and data an object enters the field of operation, the angle of entry of the object, the identification number of the track plant or on rail machinery in use and/or where the device detected is an on track plant or on rail machinery, the corresponding identity of the on track plant. The system may further include brake activation means arranged to operate when an object is detected in the field of operation.
