A system determines 102 a location of a vehicle and assesses a database104 comprising crime-related data assigns a risk level 108 to the vehicles location. The parking status 110 (for example if the vehicle is parked, parking or about to park) of the vehicle is assessed and if the risk level is above a threshold 114, a vehicle safety mechanism (such as a warning, or activating a camera) is activated 116. In the case of a warning, it may be a light on a door handle of the vehicle, where the warning light colour may be proportional to the level or risk. The warning light may be activated when a user’s hand is detected approaching a door handle. A driver may be instructed to proceed to a location of a lower risk level. The intention is to enable a driver to understand how safe or unsafe an area is when they first travel there.
